I came across a poem I wrote a number of years ago, so I thought I'd share it with you here.
IN TIMES LIKE THESE
In times when all seems hard to bear,
I think life's burdens seem unfair.
It seems I will not stand the strain,
But fall, and never rise again.
Four words from Paul remove my fear:
"Not I, but Christ", I seem to hear.
In times when I am tempted so
And in sin's paths I wish to go;
Attractions fair that seem so strong,
And all my thoughts would choose the wrong,
A message from the Word I see:
"Not I, but Christ” appears to me.
In times when I cannot withstand
The pressure to throw in my hand,
I see my efforts come to nought,
I realise that in vain I've fought,
The Word says I need not succeed:
"Not I, but Christ" is what I read.
In times when God seems far away,
In prayer my thoughts will go astray;
In guilt, I wrestle with my heart
From thoughts of earth to make it part;
Four words in prayer will make me bold:
"Not I, but Christ" is what I'm told.
I need not bear the load today,
Nor sinful thoughts lead me astray.
I need not do His work alone,
Nor pray with power of my own.
"Not I, but Christ" now I can say
This truth will be my strength today.
"I am crucified with Ch5rist:
Nevertheless I live;
Yet not I, but Christ liveth in me:
And the life which I now live in the flesh
I live by the faith of the Son of God,
Who loved me
And gave Himself for me".
